PHOTOFAIRS returns to Shanghai from September 23-26, 2021. Taking place at the iconic Shanghai Exhibition Center, the Fair looks forward to its most exciting edition to date.
Since its launch eight years ago, PHOTOFAIRS has established itself as Asia’s leading contemporary art fair dedicated to photography, photo-based artworks and new media. With its dynamic line-up of galleries from across Asia, Europe and North America, PHOTOFAIRS has become a vital crossroads for international collectors, museum curators and new buyers, in search of exciting work not yet seen in Paris, New York, and London.
The Fair plays an important role in shaping the tastes of the new generation of photography collectors who are increasingly evident in China, making it an unrivalled opportunity for galleries looking to broaden their collectors-base and to re-establish contact with clients from across Asia.
In addition to galleries showcasing contemporary photography, the Fair hosts an extensive public program that explores key historical moments, debates current trends of photography via a vibrant range of exhibitions, talks and events. You can explore more PHOTOFAIRS programs here.
PHOTOFAIRS 2021 welcomes gallery proposals for the MAIN section at the Fair, in addition to special sections PLATFORM, SOLO and SCREEN.
MAIN, this sector welcomes applications from galleries presenting ambitious solo or group artist exhibitions of modern and contemporary artwork. Presentations may feature emerging and/or established artists.
PLATFORM, a sector dedicated to supporting young galleries or artist-run spaces under the age of 8 years. A maximum of 3 artists may be presented. Galleries may only participate in this sector twice.
SOLO, a project sector focused on solo artist presentations.
SCREEN, is a film program that celebrates new film-making practices, experimental film or film as artistic medium from artists and practitioners from across the world. Each film will be shown once a day over the course of the Fair. This year the theme for SCREEN is Re. 2021 is a pivotal year. As we move toward a post-pandemic society, our world is facing a series of challenges and situations prompted by COVID-19. Re is both an action and a question: how can society rebound and build back better? Re also represents restoration, reflection, revival and remodel. Single-channel video works view will be accessible both on site in a designated screening room, as well as online at Centre for Experimental Film (CEF) – our digital partner.
Applications to PHOTOFAIRS are open to commercial galleries or artist-run spaces. Selection is based on the curatorial strength and premise of each gallery’s exhibition program, represented artists and the proposal for PHOTOFAIRS. Criteria such as quality of the art, previous art fair presentations and any projects undertaken by the gallery and its artists both locally and internationally will be taken into consideration.
In addition to the above four gallery sectors, we also launched Publishing, a new sector that looks to support this vital part of the photography community and offer publishers a platform to reach new audiences.
Application deadline: May 21, 2021.
