For two decades, Bryant Austin documented the interplay between the sun, water, and the eye – which he calls the ‘window to the soul’ – of whales and dolphins. While capturing the alignment of the sun and the moon in Yosemite National Park, he experienced his ego diminish and the cosmos exist by itself.
Bryant also trains with his breath to achieve a state of wakeful awareness underwater – a place of silence, reverence and detachment – where he connects with the whales. Bryant’s exploration with the sun, water and the being is a discipline of listening and fine tuning. Through this book, sun, water, being, these three elements coalesce and unite with the vastness of the cosmos in a deep and profound connection.
To convey the deep and various tones of Bryant’s works, the book was printed in the pentatone black and white print. This is published as a standard edition of 300 copies, as well as a special edition of 20 copies that comes with an original print in a wooden frame-like box.
About Bryant Austin
Bryant Austin is an American photographer known for his life-size portraits of whales. His collection of whale portraits serves as a critical archive for future generations, given the tenuous future of this species. His subject matter is broad, extending from whales, trees, plants, and to the sun, connecting the micro and macro worlds together with a camera. Alongside his solo exhibition ‘Light + Shadow’ (Cavallo Point, CA), he was invited to several group shows at the Datz Museum of Art (Seoul, South Korea), the Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA), and the Australian National Maritime Museum (Sydney, Australia). His first photography book, Beautiful Whale, was published in 2013 by Abrams.
