Siyuan Shen is an artist living in Beijing, China. He primarily works with videos, graphics and text. He was the Photography Director at For Him magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and has worked at several other Chinese media outlets. In 2016, he founded the video platform Flatland. His photobook Wild and Girls was published in 2017. His works have been exhibited both domestically and internationally.
Baby Flower is the second photobook made by the photographer Shen Siyuan after Wild and Girls. It collects the artist’s creative production made between 2018 and 2019, where he abandoned his former project-based approach for a new practice. The latest is more subjective, where he randomly collects his daily feelings.
The English word “baby”, which resembles the pronunciation of “despicable” in Chinese, is an apology for sarcasm. The photographer appears to be despicable and ashamed of this approach to photography driven by daily feelings. He explains that he did not face the real issue but rather amplified his sensitivity to find an easier way out. It was his wish to publish these images as a photobook, which show his sincerity and his reluctance to embellish his motive. The “flower” in Baby Flower represents a symbolic lexicon, rather than a real person or object. Furthermore, the images in quotation marks bring forward the unexpected concepts of pleasure, pessimism and romance.
